Fraudsters are trying to push their stock of forged £20 notes in advance of the new Polymer £20 coming out in February.
Follow Barclays guidance below to help avoid accepting a forged note.
How to identify a genuine £20 banknote
There are two primary security features:
Hologram image change
Tilt the note from side to side. Check the images change between a ‘£’ symbol and the number ‘20’
Bright ‘£20’ in the watermark
Hold the note up to the light. Check there is a bright ‘£20’ at the top of the Queen’s portrait
You can find a full list of security features on the Bank of England website: https://www.bankofengland.co.uk/banknotes/20-pound-note
Online banknote training
The Bank of England offers a 30-minute online banknote training course. It is designed to highlight the security features on their notes, which you can use to check your notes are genuine.
They also offer advice and a short test to check your understanding.
The University also has a Cash Handling course which goes into more detail about our cash processes.
